Maria Pavledis and Sarah Wilson – ‘Domesticated’
An interesting visual and theoretical relationship that explores issues relating to domesticity, intimate relationships and the emotional and psychological environment of these, using fabric and detail to create traces or echoes of relationships. Maria, by contrast, takes characters onto a stage set to explore scenarios and interactions.

A licensed exhibition launch event on Friday 6th May from 6pm will includes musicians and poets whose work relates or links in some way to our show. The public will have the opportunity to enjoy a rich variety of arts disciplines at one entertaining and thought-provoking event in the beautiful surroundings of one of Norwich’s finest churches.

Sub60
Sub60 started with the first Fringe run by the new committee in 2009, and was inspired by organiser Amy Wragg’s obsession with St Stephens subway, the birth of the Poetry Choir and the avant-garde leanings of poet Andy Spragg.

Since then it has become an integral part of the Norwich Fringe Festival with musicians, poets and flash mobs appearing in the subway throughout this two-week period. Local artists are invited to inhabit the subway for an hour at some point during the festival. There are no restrictions on what you can or cannot do (within the laws of the land, of course!), we only ask you don’t block entrances and exits or permanently damage the space. We want to collectively reimagine this oft-neglected space with the force of our art and transform a thoroughfare into a place to stop and stare.

2010 saw The Warhol Factory Rejects and Porta Party take over with an extravagant subway party that fast became one of the highlights of the festival if you were lucky enough to be there. We have also had experimental live poets accosting strangers in the crossroads of St Stephens subway, and Tibetan singing bowls, a sound installation piece by Jonathon Collinson.

We hope 2011 will bring an even more unusual and surprising set of performances and submissions as we open it up further. To book an hour in the subway please email amy@norwichfringefestival.com with Sub60 in the subject line of the email.

St Stephens subway, duration of the festival, free entry.

Articus Fire & Circus Meets
Articus derives its name through a fusion of the words 'art' and 'circus'. Articus is an organisation that seeks to ignite local the community to communicate, celebrate, educate and inspire each other to create a place of well-being. We are a melting pot of creative entrepreneurs who come together with the aim to relight the fire in communities by creating events, collaborations, places and opportunities for people to find their creativity and celebrate it with others.

We are currently working on putting together a social enterprise based around arts and performance with the aim of creating a funding stream for the local community, which can be used to help people access the arts more easily. We are also running weekly fire performance skills sharing workshops at Norwich Scout HQ on Jessop Road every Friday between 7pm and 10pm. We would like anyone in the community to come along and get involved. You can find us on Facebook or email us at articus@live.co.uk or call 07814 467319.

Paul Betney
14/05/2011
Guerrilla Press + Dan Gregory + Paul Betney
It took doctors 18 years to figure out that Paul Betney had Parkinson's Disease, although, to be fair, Paul had suspected all along that something wasn't quite right. When he was finally given the diagnosis, and medication that brought it under control he didn't suspect that this would spark the beginning of a strange and wonderful journey as he came to realise what the tremor had meant to him as he began to ask what getting back to 'normal' really means. Funny, poignant and deeply engaging. “Unshakable” is the amazing true story of how one man’s life was dramatically changed when he picked up a cup of coffee.

“Taking the comedy world by storm” – Liverpool Echo.

Paul Betney's Website

DAN GREGORY - Poetry As Shit. Is poetry really any good for anything?

As a writer, musician and comedian, Dan Gregory has spent most of his life trying to find his niche. He tried writing a novel, and failed. He joined numerous bands, all of which failed. He even attempted to cycle around the world, and - to nobody's surprise - he failed at that too. But then, something happened he never could have predicted. In a shameless, last-ditch attempt to find performance success, he got up on stage and read out some poems. And people seemed to enjoy them.

Two years on, and he's presenting his first full-length show at the Norwich Fringe Festival. Funny, filthy and often downright offensive, his poems tackle subjects from the sublime to the scatological. But he's often been frustrated by the niche appeal of poetry, and has started looking for ways in which it might be made more relevant to a broader audience.
“Poetry As Shit” explores Dan's foray into the world of performance poetry, and his recent attempts to find out if poetry can ever really leave the page or the stage. From university prospectuses to exercise soundtracks, he takes poetry to places where poetry's never been before. But can he make it work this time, and finally find success? Find out if Dan Gregory is actually just shit at poetry, or whether he is Poetry As Shit.

Perhaps Contraption
15/05/2011
Perhaps Contraption + Somewhere Over The Rambo
This double-act incarnation of Perhaps Contraption is an acoustic offshoot of the radical marching band that pranks around the UK with their deeply danceable assaulting pop. Squire Squier and Susie Showers combine comedy, poetry and sweet music with guitar, ukulele, flute, glockenspiel and their mouths. From a manifesto for the sandwich to questions about your orgasms, good timing and a whiff of English whimsy, we are here to make you laugh and think hard.

Perhaps Contraption formed six years ago as an avant-garde math-rock trio that grew into a collective of brass and wind instrumentalists, dancers, poets and interactive characters. Shows are tailored to the venue so that every performance is genuine, humorous and engaging. Recently their focus has moved to forming an interactive mobile device which was birthed at Glastonbury 2010 and travelled on to The Secret Garden Party and several guerrilla gigs outside the London South Bank and at the Burning Man Festival. It’s swing, it’s twisted pop, it’s a knees-up.

“A travelling carnival of the bizarre, this baffling concoction of ideas defies pigeonholing.” - Rockmidgets.com

King Laconic
16/05/2011
Barefeet presents King Laconic + Sam James Hill
A Night of the finest lo-fi, alternative, folktronica in the fine city! Featuring Sam James Hill and King Laconic.

King Laconic/Brendan Bennett is a Norwich-based singer-songwriter. His guitar playing is reminiscent of an Elliott Smith or a Nick Drake in its intricacy and expressiveness but in no way bound by these references. He transcends any and all of his influences through sheer passion and an often startling originality, from delicate picking to propulsive chord progressions and back again, sometimes in the space of a single song. Hear, for example, the frantic picking of ‘Patient Communication’ switch seamlessly to an at once euphoric and despairing thrash, or how ‘Muddy Snow’ veers between icy folk and crunching, dirtily melodic rock. Vocally he is much the same; his voice stretches from a sparingly and perfectly deployed falsetto to what can at times only be termed an impassioned yelp, wild yet utterly controlled, always unaffected and always tailored to best fit his lyrics. The lyrics are compressed with meaning, shunning superfluity so as to hone in on not only their precise intention but an open eyed and unspoken ambiguity.

Brendan is, like all good musicians, best seen live. When an artist can not just play but so obviously relish and revel in his performance, you know you’re in for a good gig, full of intensity and intimacy.

King Laconic on Facebook

Sam James Hill is now called "Hillwalker" due to involvement of Lydia Walker, Bird of Prey. They play noisy post-folk with loads of delay and distortion with mandolins instead of guitars

"Folk prog drone pedal enthusiast" - Something Good.

Now with excessive amounts of reverb.

Sam has supported the likes of Jeremy Warmsley, Peggy Sue and Beth Jeans Houghton and been played on BBC Norfolk Introducing.

There is an EP called 'Pictures of Frozen Water' which is out on Barefeet Records on samjameshill.bandcamp.com

Luke Wright
17/05/2011
Norwich Poetry Club
This month we have a world exclusive. Back in 2006 Thick Richard burst onto the poetry scene with reputation for raucous late night gigs and a penchant for a beer or two afterwards. The plucky Mancunian duo, Matt and Bob, were favourites on the scene for about three years, becoming the first poets to play the legendary Reading & Leeds Festivals, paving the way for dickheads like me to have a go.

Then they disbanded. Matt, who wrote the poems (Bob was manager and performer only) said they were breaking up because he'd done all he wanted to do. He didn't have any new stuff and wasn't concerned with plugging away on the scene if it wasn't exciting his creative juices any more (wish more poets were that honest). Then, about a month a go I got a message from him, this is what it said:

"ThiCk riChaRd...
...conceived iN tHe recovery position in the basement of a poliCe statiOn and brought up like a ballerinas breaKFast. its ThiCk riChaRd.
the only surviving member of the original ThiCk riChaRd line up after their fateful plane crash tour of 2007, Matthew Duffy has made a full recovery + is ready to return to the stage to upset you all once again. nasally lyrics about death, fried breakfasts + bastards like yourself, all delivered slightly too fast with a punch of salt. lock up your Gran, ThiCk riChaRds back."

Matt has gone solo and has a batch of new poems. And what's more Matt has chosen this very club for his comeback. Which is nice.

Watch this : Youtube Video

Support comes from our very own John Osborne, whose second book of poems The New Blur Album is out next month. It's excellent, I know, I've read it.

We'll also be playing host to newcomer Hattie Grunewald, who is a former student of Caroline Bird, who wowed us a few months back.

And ... I'll be hosting. I being Luke Wright, you know me - tall and increasingly over weight.

headCRASH
headCRASH started out as an occasional night nearly three years ago, and is now one of the fixtures of the Norwich spoken-word scene, showcasing on the penultimate Wednesday of every month at the Birdcage pub.

Poet and actor Russell J Turner - a man once described as ‘making your life a whole lot weirder’ - presents a mixture of established and up-and-coming poets, leavened with a soupcon of comedy and music. And badges. Honestly, they’re legendary. Worth the price of entry alone.

We are delighted to be working with the Norwich Fringe Festival again. Last year we opened the festival with the brilliant London performance poet Kate Tempest. This year we present an outstanding selection of local wordsmiths: poet and author John Osborne; Jesus look-alike, comic and poetic raconteur Andy Bennett; self-styled stroppy lesbian feminist and polemicist John William Brown; and a bevy of brilliant poets from the UEA including Carmina Masoliver and Catherine Woodward.

Please come and join us, we’d love to see you. For more details, contact headCRASH@hotmail.co.uk, go to Facebook and search for ‘headCRASH’ or visit www.facebook.com/russell.j.turner and write stuff on my wall.

“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the common place, the slaves of the ordinary” – Cecil Beaton

Local fashion designers have been carefully chosen to showcase their designs in a wide range of styles, each in their own unique and individual way. With the aid of visual effects, live music and an amazing styling and modelling team, this catwalk show is sure to be full of excitement and sparkle.

The evening will begin with songs on the piano by local singer/model Jordan Jackson, who will be providing musical interludes throughout the evening, giving you a chance to relax, drink, snack and mingle, and also a chance to buy some of the items you see.

We are also joined for the evening by Norwich’s favourite living statue, Ant E Statik, and something special from local singer and songwriter Zarah Jones.

The featured designers will include:

Shhhh Collective – Currently taking Norwich by storm, Shhhh will be displaying items from their unisex T-shirt and accessory range, designed by a selection of emerging local artists.

Deja Vu - Lizzy Whitman brings us ethically made limited-edition clothes, in recycled and vintage fabrics, bespoke and off the peg.

Dilate Clothing – As seen on MTV, Dilate are a hip-hop clothing company and will be showcasing some of their funky, urban, old-school retro T-shirts and accessories for this evening.

Vanessa Lewis – From Audrey Hepburn-inspired pencil skirts and shift dresses to one-off contemporary pieces, Vanessa will be bringing along some of her favourites from her own-label fashion boutique.

Stone Age Designs – Jewellery designs made with sterling grade silver, copper and interesting semi-precious gemstones, and recycled metal when possible; hand-made to create unique organic-looking pieces.

Rebecca Heaps – Fresh from her final year at university, Rebecca will be delighting the senses with a selection from her and under/outerwear designs. Expect big things from this young lady.

Malarki Clothing – Having been featured in both Vogue and Tatler, Malarki will be showing some of their gorgeous range of organic clothing for 0-2-year-olds, and will also be giving us a sneak peek at some of their never-seen-before adult range; old clothes transformed into new designs.

Vivid Trading – Traditional North African jewellery designs made from Fairtrade materials.

Katie Karara – Creating sexualised humorous fictitious outfits, Katie Karara puts the glamour back into knitting.

There will be a free after-party at Karma Kafe from 10.30pm till late.

Justin Panks
19/05/2011
Justin Panks + Andrew Miller + Ashley Stoke + Comedy Poopcast
Justin Panks is not a happy man. Not any more, and probably not ever again. He has been awake for a very long time now – longer than even he can remember, and it is making him say and do terrible things. This is not his fault. Apart from the initial stages of the process, which might have been, but which now seems a very long time ago. Do not expect him to pull his punches now – it is far, far too late to pull out. Obviously, it goes without saying that this is not a show for the easily offended. It is comedy as violent catharsis.

Toting his particular brand of uncompromising 'punk rock' comedy, Justin Panks delivers unexpected punchlines and conjures up disturbing mental images that will stay with an audience for a lifetime.
Unapologetically fearless and committed to his cause he wades into the underbelly of everyday life surprising, shocking and delighting audiences with his well-crafted jokes disguised as anecdotes.
Like a sufferer of Tourette's syndrome that has had time to edit and construct his most embarrassing and revealing outbursts before making them public, he creates genuine excitement and generates enough power to fill any room.

Justin Panks on the internet

ANDREW MILLER

Andrew Miller is very tall, he has hair and glasses and a face. He can quite often be found selling empty boxes to members of the general public, which sort of makes him Norwich’s answer to Noel Edmonds, and it’s about time, frankly. When he is not at work, he spends his time denying that he is Norwich’s answer to Noel Edmonds while secretly savouring the mild sexual frisson the thought brings him.

“I did not kill a man in a badly advised TV stunt and I have never even met anybody called Mike Smith”
Andrew Miller

ASHLEY STOKES – Touching The Starfish

Ashley Stokes is a writer, editor and lecturer in creative writing based in Norwich. Since 1997 his fiction has appeared in a variety of journals and anthologies and won a 2002 Bridport Prize for The Suspicion of Bones. He has also co-written a screenplay and co-written and presented four series of satirical arts programmes on Norwich’s Future Radio. He will be reading from his first novel, Touching the Starfish, which was published in February 2010 by Unthank Books. Ashley is currently working on The Syllabus of Errors, twelve stories of loss, obsession and getting in a state.

THE COMEDY POOP PODCAST presents their first EVER live show 'Flamingo Burlesque*'

From the creators of 'The Comedy Poop Podcast' comes a kooky sketch show like no other. Expect some surreal, un-PC material involving Adolf Hitler (U.S.P), a bus stop and a cavalcade of weird characters performed by Pete Butler, Peter Renton and Lucy Burgess.

* There won’t be any flamingos performing burlesque.

Guerrilla Press, our daily comedic digest of the days news, will start the night off with Tom Read, Andrew Miller and Ashley Stokes

Swaggering Gallants
19/05/2011
Swaggering Gallants
Swaggering Gallants are an acoustic folk/blues duo that formed in the autumn of 2010, when songwriter Adam Quinn (lead vocals and guitar) felt compelled to inflict his fusion of folk and blues upon unsuspecting drunks. After recording his music he realised another musician would be required to complete the live sound; that's when he contacted old band-mate and friend Mitch Hill (backing vocals, guitar and percussion). After an initial rehearsal, and a session of heavy drinking, they decided they were good enough to immediately play a gig.

Their debut performance was well received at an open mic night at the Wildman pub in Norwich. After this initial success they decided they needed a name that reflected their cavalier attitude and razor-sharp image: Swaggering Gallants.

Swaggering Gallants' music is a blend of traditional folk, poetry and literature with contemporary acoustic pop and blues, taking their cues from the likes of Nick Drake and Bob Dylan, but unafraid to push boundaries and experiment with what folk music is, and can be. Adam's emotive lyricism ranges from soul-rending balladry to contemporary commentary that often borders on the controversial, which, when combined with Mitch's strongly defined yet subtle musicality, creates a dynamic songwriting blend that is both unique and highly provocative. At the least their music is easy on the ears, but on form they are intensely thought-provoking, deeply emotive, and truly a spectacle to behold.

Swaggering Gallants are currently promoting their recent release "Knave of Hearts", a self-produced six-track EP showcasing some of their work.

A Life Not Sweet Anymore
Italy, the country of the ‘sweet life’, has become a surreal labyrinth, where absurdity and irrationality among men is the constant. This is the conclusion drawn by the photographic collective Pommefritz, consisting of Max Boschini and Mauro Manuini, including on this occasion their friend Marco Brioni.

The exhibition, part of the Norwich Fringe Festival 2011, will be held at The Birdcage and will be reflected through 40 shots, which show not a commonplace situation of Italy, but the mood of those who, as artists, operate between indifference, arrogance, short-sightedness and ignorance. The selection of photographs, prepared for the occasion by Loris Franzini, give us a glimpse of marginal Italy, crowded with men aware of their own destiny and, ultimately, a little bit crazy, divided between fable and drama, sentimental passions and social contradictions. A life not sweet anymore, but quite bitter!

The aim of the collective is to create and promote activities focused on photography and art: a group project where the individual contribution adds more to the final result, and therefore gaining more value.  Over the years the group has gained much acclaim, displaying its work in locations as diverse as Romania, Hong Kong, Ecuador, Bangladesh and Australia, as well as numerous locations across Italy and Europe.

Private view at The Birdcage, Friday 20th May, 6pm. Free entry. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday 22nd May.

Robert Kett
20/05/2011
Robert Kett the Musical + Patrick Lappin
The year is 1549. Unrest ferments as young pretender King Edward VI imposes the unfair Enclosures Act, giving rich landowners the right to snatch land from the common folk. One such yeoman was Robert Kett of Wymondham. At once patriot and traitor, reactionary and rebel, Kett was an intriguing, mercurial character who seized the moment, but it didn’t take long before the authorities wanted to seize him!

This is a folk-punk musical, something like if The Clash, Billy Bragg and Half Man Half Biscuit got together and caused a riot, with original music and lyrics by former “Misguided Tour Guide” and “Normal Service” regular Tom Read. The rebels of the Norfolk Uprising stood up to the authorities and showed them that peaceful direct action can achieve fairer rights.

Their battle is still as relevant today as it was in their time. Make sure you rock along!

“Patrick Lappin is Inbred” by Patrick Lappin

“It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing”.

“I might be an idiot, mate, but at least I’m not some coward hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. There’s a word for people like you.”
Patrick Lappin, December 2010.

Patrick Lappin never wanted to be acclaimed as a great person, or a great writer, or even a nice man. He just wanted to be able to stay in bed each morning until the postman had been. But, as the song says, a man can only take so much of his own feckless indolence before his dignity revolts and says “No more!”. And, also, the Royal Mail started messing around with the delivery times (it’s not a very well-known song).

This show is a prayer for its author’s very own future. It’s time to get up, shut up and get on. Unless, of course, there’s one last excuse lurking in the background. Something big, something distressing and embarrassingly weird that he can point to and say, “See? It’s not my fault. Pity me, I’m medically a dickhead.” Surely though, after a lifetime of flimsy excuses, there are none left?

“Patrick Lappin is Inbred” is Patrick’s first solo show, which he will debut at the Norwich Fringe Festival in May 2011.

Now a regular on the London stand-up circuit, he previously made up one half of the legendary Great Yarmouth poetry pioneers “Yanny & Paddy”. He has also written and starred in two Edinburgh Fringe shows, 2008’s “The Mid-90s la la la” (with John Osborne) and 2010’s “Switzerland’s 100 Greatest Beekeepers” (with John Osborne and Yanny Mac).

“Always hilarious… Intelligent, witty, masterly stand-up” - Maddog Magazine Fringe Report

"I don't respect him as a poet or, indeed, as a human being." - Michael Fabricant MP

Jah Youth
20/05/2011
Jah Youth Meets Free King
For the first time in Norwich, roots reggae sound system veterans Jah Youth Sound will be playing in a roots culture style alongside Norwich’s Free King Sound. In authentic fashion, both crews will be in full effect with two sound systems playing in one arena.

Jah Youth sound system, established in 1975, are amongst the top roots reggae sound systems in the world. Spiritual reggae music of the highest order, played on their noticeable red speaker box stack, creates a vibe everyone should experience. Jah Youth have played all over the world, and in doing so have left a legacy earning them their suited name of “The Roots Ambassadors”. In 1987, Jah Youth began a tour of Africa; the sound system was flown in, and The Roots Ambassadors were soon playing reggae dances all over the continent. On their return to the UK, half the sound was left in Kenya with some local Kenyan youngsters, “The Jah Youth Crew”, to continue the good works. Jah Youth are a true inspiration to many.

Free King Sound, established in 2002, are a conscious reggae sound/promoter from the east of England. Backed by an ever-growing crew of selectors, singers, producers and grafters, they all share the same aim of spreading a positive message of unity, love and understanding. As of 2008, Free King started releasing their own productions on the Sugarbeat label.

In Room 2 will be Get Low Cartel vs The Lick, two of Norwich’s top party rockers going head-to-head: expect electro-funk UK bass, classic bangers and rare grooves.

Join us for a whirlwind tour of darkness, depression, artichokes, and things that rhyme with punt. From the deep and meaningful to the downright filthy, Fractured Discourse promise you a night of poetry you'll never forget, whether you want to or not...

With John Simpson Wedge, Hasina Allen and Laurie Eaves.

Hasina Allen is an exhibitionist who gets her kicks from waving her rhymes around on stage. Not even out of her teens, the 19-year-old has spent the last few years indulging irresponsibly in this performance fetish. Once described as deceptively “filthy, but sweet” and now described as neither, this part storyteller, part dictionary fanatic is still running around the open-mic circuit, getting high off applause and watching people do the same.

L. Eaves lives. Understandably this makes a lot of people very angry and he has spent the last 19 years trying in vain to gain approval of his existence whilst avoiding violent mobs. His main tactic to achieve his peers’ support is to mumble rhymes into microphones. This method has so far failed to yield positive results. In his spare time L. Eaves’ chief activities include apologising, waking up and weeping profusely (usually in that order).

John Simpson Wedge is Norwich’s answer to Dr. Seuss. Exactly what that means he isn’t sure, but he likes the moniker so he’s sticking to it. His first public performance was at the tender age of six weeks, and since then no one’s been able to get him away from the microphone. When he’s not on stage he’s writing a PhD on why we should be nice to killer robots.

Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7.30pm, finishing at 9pm.

Keep it groovy!

Have you ever noticed how some comedy shows are succinct, with plots that neatly tie up and everything works out in the end? Tom Read doesn’t think life’s like that. Welcome to his Comedy Cul-de-Sac, where an unruly rabble of characters reside, but nobody seems to be going anywhere. If you feel up a dead end, this show should be right up your street!

With fantastic special guests including the ‘Quipper of Twitter’ Tony Cowards, Andrew Miller, Paul Knight, Jake Wyatt and more!

This is a no-holds-barred open mic night, so expect strong language and frivolity of the wordiest kind. Slots are limited to five minutes each, and because we love you so much everyone gets a free drink – thanks to those lovely people at Olive's!

Ed Carfrae
24/05/2011
Now or Never! + Ross Ellis + Ed Carfrae
Described as the “UK’s second worst anarchist publication” by notable sources in the world of independent media, Now or Never! has been causing trouble for nearly a decade – spreading fear and confusion among evangelists, leading politicians, and admirers of Richard Littlejohn everywhere.

With an editorial policy best described as eclectic, it was the first UK journal to publish the infamous ‘Mohammed cartoons’, the only publication to have made a leading member of the Green Party openly weep at a conference, and has featured such journalistic firsts as a campaign to supply pornography to prisoners and Michael Jackson’s last ever interview.

In the past, copies have been stolen and burned, and the team have been denounced as everything from Nazis, Maoists, necrophiles and fans of T’Pau to Members of the New World Order by a variety of angry minority interest groups, including Morris dancers, hippies and Catholics.

More recently, the publication was the cause of narrowly averted industrial action in the form of a printers’ strike, due to a misunderstanding over the satirical implications of the phrase “Could you run your home on white power?” In this notable instance, the magazine managed to agitate even before the issue had been bound properly, a fact of which the editorial team and writers are justifiably proud.

Join them for a panel-based discussion in which they will probably not even be able to agree with each other on various key issues of the day.

Ross Ellis made his debut on the open mic circuit at the University of Lincoln. His first audiences consisted of a handful of slightly worse-for-wear friends, but Ross quickly discovered that the same rules applied to making a small group of drunk pals giggle as they did for a packed room. A snappy dresser, Ross has a keen eye for comedy in everyday trivialities, and isn’t afraid to broach the kind of subjects that most of us would shy away from.
At the Norwich Fringe Festival, Ross candidly talks about losing his virginity, but also tackles more sedate subject matter, like how Facebook is supposed to be used and dealing with ex-partners in the digital age.

Ed Carfrae cut his teeth on open mic nights in and around Lincoln, where he studied drama. The founder of his university’s first ever comedy society, Ed both organises and performs at a variety of stand-up gigs. He also made his Edinburgh Festival debut in summer 2010 with the plays Bonus Material and Blood Brothers along with further stand-up appearances – all of which received rave reviews.

For his appearance at the Norwich Fringe Festival, Ed waxes lyrical on the highs and lows of cinema-going, the disadvantages of a vertically challenged partner and his desperate pursuit of parental approval.

Adam Warne is new to stand-up comedy after reading poetry in the back rooms of pubs for the last few years. He has performed at the Luton Fringe Festival as part of the Poetry Choir, supported Byron Vincent at Norwich Arts Centre and hosted the infamous cabaret nights at The Birdcage. When he is not writing poetry, Adam likes nothing more than to relax and unwind with some good, old fashioned amateur dentistry.

Lorcan McGrane - Geekdom

Hey you! Do you want that top job? Do you want that hot girl or guy to notice you? Do you want that sweet automobile of some sort? Why not become a ‘Geek’? What, with blockbuster movies and hipster vintage T-shirts, it’s the lifestyle craze that’s sweeping the world! In this autobiographical, audio-visual odyssey, comedian and lifelong geek Lorcan McGrane will show you how.

Lorcan McGrane is originally from Monaghan, if fact he is still from there. He started stand up in 2006 while doing a PhD on Superhero Movies and has foisted his perversions and peccadilloes on an unsuspecting public in Norwich, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Monaghan, Derry, and Belfast, with success, if by success one means making people laugh, rather than parlaying his brand of veiled self-therapy, blasphemy, gauging of audience’s perversity levels, and childhood (and adulthood) existential loneliness into a viable job.

Howlbackhum presents Johnny Foreigner
In 2000, a group of music fans got together to form two of the longest-running indie nights in Norwich. This eclectic group of like minds formed WombatWombat and HowlBack Hum, brands consistently associated with the most cutting-edge music that the city has to offer.

Successes at some of our smaller venues led to a progression to Norwich Arts Centre. Out went broken PAs and home-made hand-stamps, in came a professional approach, tethered to the same cutting-edge ethos.

For the past five years WombatWombat and HowlBack Hum have shared a monthly bill, with the Wombats in the hall and the Hummers in the bar. Here, though, for one night only, it’s a swap round, with the Wombats in the bar and the Hummers in the hall!

Lo-fi lovelies Johnny Foreigner will be headlining, with support from local musicians in the hall, with WombatWombat hosting performances in the bar.

Albert Cooper’s Jazz Life
From boyhood in 1942 at the age of eight years (you work it out), I have been involved in music of many kinds including church choirs, choral societies, opera, theatre, skiffle, folk, bluegrass, blues and jazz. Today it’s Albert Cooper and the Blues and Boogie Band: anything from Bessie Smith to Bob Dylan to Albert King; but re-workings, so not covers in the strict sense. Gigs with the band are few and far between nowadays – why, I just don't know! Then it’s Albert Cooper’s Jazz Life, accompanied by my son, The Chris Cooper Trio (see The Lost Levels and cfxmusic on myspace sites). I just keep going, hoping others will join in. So, will the real Albert Cooper please stand up?!

The B-Side Project
The B-side Project is an exciting new musical collaboration and remix project to hit the UK, and Norwich in particular, giving local music artists and electronic producers a unique and well-connected platform from which to promote and gain experience.

Launched officially in 2010, the first year process culminated in the annual Showcase & Awards event in February. To celebrate the launch of the first Norwich B-Side Project album, the project is honoured to be involved with the Norwich Fringe Festival.

The B Side Website

B-Side have teamed up with the Karma Kafe to bring you two rooms of bands and DJs with an abundance of musical genres and styles. First up we have the top floor for the “B-Side Buskers”. These consist of Killamonjambo, who will be fusing funk, ska, reggae, dance and rock.

Killamonjambo Website

Collider, with their distinctive experimental/post-rock sound, and Jim Jams – an unusual group of musicians, not officially a ‘band’, but a group of like-minded individuals who come together in different forms to deliver their 12-bar blues, reggae, ska and jazz.

Collider Website

The last of the buskers are Keltrix, very special guests from Cambridge – grooving it up one minute with foot-stomping crowd-pleasers, then sliding into slick jazzy moments, before rousing it all up again with hints of rock, disco and funk. Get your stomping boots and your groove on for some festival fun!

Keltrix Website

Taking the evening into the early hours, “B-Side Beats” takes over the basement room. Opening the party is Smash Syndicate who will be smashing up the dancefloor with their homegrown drum ‘n’ bass/dubstep. Next up will be local up-and-coming producer DJ Dunny, who will be unleashing his Ibiza-influenced tech-house beats. Finally, Stride will be performing - expect plenty of bass-driven tribal house and techno.

Friday 27th May, Karma Kafe. Upstairs 7.30pm-11.30pm, £4 (£3 NUS). Basement 11.30pm-4am – free entry.

Tickets available at wegottickets.com and Whitelabel Records, Castle Mall, Norwich.

Why not become a “Geek”* What, with blockbuster movies and hipster vintage t-shirts, It’s the lifestyle craze that’s sweeping the world! In this autobiographical, audio-visual odyssey, comedian and lifelong geek Lorcan McGrane will show you how.

"Hi there, a lot of people** come up and ask me: "Hey Lorcan, how do I become a geek?, it seems like a awesome and cool lifestyle choice", and I tell them: "find a time machine, go back to the late 1980s and spend your formative teenage years virginal and friendless with only action figures and copies of '2000AD', 'Overkill’, and 'Sensational She-Hulk' for company, and Bob's your uncle- a bright future of pedantic deconstruction and virginal and friendless adulthood is easily obtained, failing that come to my comedy show instead"***

*Obviously being a geek won’t help with any of the above but being obsessed with fictional Amazonian ladies, bountyhunting cyborgs from parallel dimensions, and animated superhero cartoons will distract you from meaninglessness of life and while away the hours until the apocalypse.

Lorcan have appeared on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio 4, Newstalk, Phantom FM, Channel 4Radio, the Tom Green Show, and two Edinburgh shows.

"Straight faced comedy with a good sense of comic timing" *** Three Weeks

Isy Suttie + Support
Already known as Dobby from Peep Show (Channel 4), as Kiki from Whites (BBC2) and – most popularly – as “girl seen picking nose on bus”, Isy is a long-standing musical comic who brings her one-woman musical love story to you. Yes, you. Love Lost in the British Retail Industry features a lovelorn checkout girl, a reluctant vegan, an angsty American singer-songwriter and a Fairy Godmother, all played by Isy. It tells the story of unrequited love in the aisles of a supermarket in her hometown of Matlock, Derbyshire.

Dripping with dreams and heartbreak, Isy’s world is a must for anyone who likes their comedy dripping with joie de vivre, music and pathos. She will leave you full of laughter, your heart full of hope.

Isy has completed two sell-out Edinburgh runs, and this was one of two stand-up shows to be chosen for Sydney Arts Festival in 2010. She has also completed a national tour.

Isy has also written and appeared in numerous BBC Radio 4 shows, including The Now Show, Laurence and Gus: Hearts and Minds and Loose Ends. She spent two seasons as a comedy consultant for Channel 4 teen drama Skins and is one of the core team on the BBC1 animal sketch show Walk on the Wild Side. She has been nominated for two British Comedy Awards, in 2009 and 2011.

If it doesn't then get ready for fresh stand-up on the subjects of sloth and crushed dreams. Either way, the show will certainly be worthy of attention.

Winner of the Guardian Readers' Stand-up, 'Funny Women' and 'So You Think You're Funny' semi-finalist.

Hilary Koe - Lesbian Feminist Comedian

How many Lesbian Feminists does it take to change a light bulb?

Hilary Koe is a lesbian feminist, who is also a comedian – although it might seem a contradiction in terms. When the other lesbian feminists find out that she is a comedian, she cannot be at all sure that they will not demand her badge back. It is possible that Hilary is the only lesbian feminist comedian currently in captivity.

This is the story of how she was almost arrested at the Norwich Pride Festival for activities which could conceivably have caused a riot. But not a laugh riot. Well, some people have no sense of humour…

Metal Lust presents a weekend of Thrashers 'n' Death Dealers
Metal Lust hosts a UK metal showcase in Norwich on the 27th-28th May, supported by both the UK's Terrorizer Magazine & Bloodstock Festival.

These ‘lustful’ promoters are moving from strength to strength building a good following here in the east. With their Waterfront club night also now officially becoming a Sonisphere Festival club night, all eyes are on these guys. With links to major festivals that play host to the big four – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – as well as the likes of Motorhead and Slipknot, they are likely to bring some exciting bands to Norwich in the forthcoming months.

Their recent concerts have brought bands in from as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil, Los Angeles, Wisconsin, Boston in the US, and Norway, so keep a close eye on these guys, as they will rock this town for sure.

Check www.metallust.com for concert updates.

? This UK metal showcase features 10 bands from Birmingham, London, Wales, Yorkshire and East Anglia.
Friday’s headliners Desecration tour Europe in support of their sixth album, Forensix, and have played as far afield as Mexico.

? Saturday’s thrash-filled line-up is headlined by Collapse, who played the UK’s Bloodstock festival in 2010, Hammerfest 2010, supported German thrash titans, Sodom, and – amazingly – have been featured on Iranian TV, amongst all the media interest worldwide!

Dub Mafia
28/05/2011
Dub Mafia + Luke's Anger + Siris
Since forming in November 2009 Dub Mafia have attracted global attention. The high-energy 100% live dance act has had an incredible first year, playing shows and festivals across the UK and Europe, receiving an overwhelming reception from a lively and energetic fan base everywhere they go.

Early 2010 saw an extremely successful European tour across Germany, Holland, Denmark, Finland and Croatia, late summer saw them return to the UK festival scene playing at many festivals including Boomtown, Secret Garden Party, One Love, Shambala, Beach Break and many more. Dub Mafia rounded off the year’s success by playing on the main stage at The New Music Festival in Poland, where they were coined the discovery of the festival, and to a sell-out show in Lithuania.

Dub Mafia are a band whose originality and uniqueness speaks for itself. As one of only a handful of live dance acts nationally, the band set themselves apart from even these by using no backing tracks. Their ability to capture their audiences with this unique live sound is reflected in the success of their live recorded YouTube videos. These reached a combined viewing of a over a quarter of a million hits in their first eight months.

The Dub Mafia sound is impossible to categorise, comprising of such a diverse range of different elements. Andrew, the drummer, has a setup of acoustic and electronic drums. Along with their extravagant ‘5 Congo’ percussionist, Jago, this makes for a very powerful drum sound. Live bass guitar runs through bass synths via a midi-style pick-up that pushes the boundaries of technology. A mixture of analogue and soft synth keyboards layer themselves on top to give the band a bass-heavy and cutting-edge sound. The guitarist uses a midi-style pick-up alongside analogue pedals to create a huge range of sounds, way beyond those of a conventional guitar, making him one of the most exciting guitarists around. Eva’s vocals, with her rich diverse tones and original melodies, enhance the collective sound and complements the dark undertones of the band. By use of a vocal effects processor, Eva pushes her stage performance to new levels, delivering custom harmonies and effects. Some of Eva’s vocal lines are also being cut by the bands turntablist, Snafu, who uses a modified QFO turntable.
This unique live set-up and sound gives Dub Mafia a widespread appeal, which attracts both dance music and live band lovers alike.

Luke's Anger

Luke Sanger currently records and gigs under the pseudonym Luke’s Anger. Under this guise he has produced and released an array of tracks spanning back to 2004.

He performs an original live PA using a combination of hardware and software to deliver spontaneous and dancefloor-friendly techno, once described as "wonkier than a table with three legs and grimier than an army truck".

Gigs have taken him all over Europe, the USA and just about every corner of the UK, most notably at festivals such as Glastonbury, Glade, Bloc Weekend, Life and Shambala.

Luke also runs well-respected independent record label Bonus Round, which focuses on releasing top-quality bass-heavy music.

Local electronic DJ Siris will be spinning the decks all night long.

Siris has been creating music for over 3 years and is booked to DJ for events across the east of the UK on a regular basis. He is based around Norwich, and is currently a studio engineer at future radio studios, with literally tonnes of tunes under his belt, check out his stuff and get in touch.
